Shield AI’s X-BAT and the Runway Problem
Verified as of October 9, 2026
Modern Warfighter reviewed the government records and attributed reporting behind each consequential claim in this article. A Confirmed claim is stated in the cited primary record. A Qualified claim is supported, with its limitation noted beside it.
Verified Claims
X-BAT’s design and first-flight status
Qualified. Shield AI describes an uncrewed jet designed for vertical takeoff and landing. Its October 8 release reports flight-test aircraft under construction and flight testing planned later in 2026. The aircraft’s proposed capability is distinct from a completed full-scale flight demonstration.

X-BAT’s tail-sitting launch and recovery concept
Qualified. Shield AI’s design page shows X-BAT standing nose-up on a wheeled launch-and-recovery vehicle and describes launch and recovery from remote sites, portable setups, land bases and maritime platforms. It lists a 40-by-14-by-6-foot storage envelope against a 39-foot wingspan, consistent with the folded-wing transport configuration shown in company imagery. The launch and recovery sequence described in the article reflects this company concept, not a flight demonstration.

The March 2026 wing revision
Qualified. Shield AI announced a new X-BAT wing on March 4, 2026, describing it as a “new sleek wing for better aerodynamic performance” and showing a 45 percent scale model at the Air & Space Forces Association Warfare Symposium. Company imagery from the October 2025 unveiling shows the original design’s kinked leading edge. Current imagery shows straight leading edges.

Engine and nozzle ground test
Confirmed. GE’s July 20 announcement identifies the F110-GE-129E with AVEN and reports integrated ground engine light-off at Peebles, Ohio. It also records AVEN’s earlier F-16 research flights. The reported milestone concerns the propulsion assembly on the ground.
Record: GE Aerospace, July 20, 2026
AVEN’s proposed vertical-flight control role
Qualified. Shiva Vallabhaneni, identified as Shield AI’s senior propulsion engineer, explains that AVEN directs thrust for attitude control during vertical flight. His account also describes thrust modulation during descent. GE hosts this account, but its author works for Shield AI. It describes the planned aircraft’s control demands.
Record: GE Aerospace, August 20, 2026
Afterburner use for vertical launch
Qualified. Shiva Vallabhaneni’s account states that the engine ignites its afterburner to generate the thrust needed for vertical launch. For landing, it describes thrust modulated to closely match the aircraft’s weight. This describes the planned launch and recovery method. The account supplies no fuel-burn figure, exhaust temperature or deck-heating assessment.
Record: GE Aerospace, August 20, 2026
Maximum range, combat radius and weapon carriage
Qualified. Shield AI lists maximum range above 2,000 nautical miles. GE states a 1,000-nautical-mile combat radius. Shield AI lists internal air-to-air and air-to-surface weapons, plus external hardpoints for large strike weapons. These are design figures. The releases supply no flight results or quantified vertical-recovery reserve. Internal strike carriage is explicitly included.
Records: Shield AI, X-BAT design page and GE Aerospace, July 20, 2026
V-BAT’s stated endurance and naval launch record
Qualified. Shield AI advertises 12-plus hours of V-BAT endurance. A Navy photograph records a V-BAT launch aboard USS Carter Hall on May 20, 2023, to test flight capability. The endurance figure remains a manufacturer claim. The photograph documents a naval launch, without establishing X-BAT performance.
Records: Shield AI, V-BAT design page and U.S. Navy, May 20, 2023
Coast Guard contract and shipboard operational testing
Confirmed. The Coast Guard awarded Shield AI a cutter-based surveillance services contract on June 26, 2024, identifying V-BAT as the aircraft. In July 2025, it reported completed operational testing aboard cutters Midgett and Stone. The testing concerns V-BAT surveillance services. It does not qualify X-BAT for ship operations.
Records: U.S. Coast Guard, June 27, 2024 and U.S. Coast Guard, July 31, 2025
V-BAT safety record
Qualified. Reuters reported more than 50 V-BAT aircraft destroyed in crashes in Shield AI’s internal fleet. Shield AI cited 10 customer operational mishaps. Internal figures cover 18 months of testing or training. Customer figures begin in early 2025.
Record: Reuters, June 5, 2026
Frisco’s role in the company’s aircraft work
Confirmed. Shield AI’s September 30 announcement identifies Frisco as its prototyping site and V-BAT’s home. This confirms the site role described by the company.
Record: Shield AI, September 30, 2026
Hivemind flew on two Navy surrogate jets
Confirmed. NAVAIR records two BQM-177As flying with Hivemind at Point Mugu on December 11, 2025. A virtual F/A-18 assigned defense against simulated adversaries. The BQM aircraft were real. The mission lead was virtual. The test did not involve X-BAT.
Record: NAVAIR, January 12, 2026
The Navy’s $50 million RIMES action
Confirmed. The August 13 Navy announcement invests $50 million in expanded Shield AI risk reduction for Runway Independent Maritime Expeditionary Strike, with DIU and Navy acquisition organizations. The government release names Shield AI and RIMES. Shield AI supplies the X-BAT connection in its October 8 release.
Records: Department of the Navy, August 13, 2026 and Shield AI, October 8, 2026
Atlas is another announced RIMES development entry
Qualified. Mach Industries announced a DIU RIMES award on June 16. Its Atlas design with Whisper Aero uses hybrid-electric propulsion and JetFoil. Mach states a 1,000-pound payload and 1,400 nautical miles of range. Mach does not say whether 1,400 nautical miles is one-way range or a round-trip distance. Its figures are development claims, with no matched flight-test comparison against X-BAT.
Record: Mach Industries, June 16, 2026
The $150 million modification and $400 million combined figure
Qualified. Shield AI announces a $150 million modification executed by the Navy and funded through the Pentagon’s Defense Exportability Features program, with matching company capital. With the August action and match, announced commitments total $200 million government and $200 million company. The announcement concerns development commitments. It does not provide an expenditure ledger or an aircraft production quantity.
Record: Shield AI, October 8, 2026
The three-to-one footprint and sortie-generation claim
Qualified. Shield AI says three X-BATs fit in one legacy fighter’s deck space and ties that footprint to higher sortie generation. The design page supplies no measured shipboard turnaround time or sortie rate.
Record: Shield AI, X-BAT design page
Ship airflow complicates precise aircraft positioning
Confirmed. NAVAIR’s airwake account describes variations in airflow around ships and challenges maintaining precise aircraft position near the deck. This is a general ship-aircraft integration record, not an X-BAT at-sea test result.
Record: NAVAIR, August 23, 2007
Brandon Tseng’s runway remark
Qualified. Shield AI cofounder Brandon Tseng said “You can’t really hide a runway” on The Shawn Ryan Show, episode #247, released October 23, 2025, at about 1:35:51. The remark is a company executive’s rationale for runway independence. The interview predates Shield AI’s March 2026 wing revision.
Marines moved forward aviation support points during NAWDC 25.3
Confirmed. The Marine Corps records mobile forward arming and refueling points for rotary-wing aircraft during October 27–31, 2025. Navy personnel observed and trained in the ground-support work. The exercise is a precedent for distributed aviation support. It was not an X-BAT demonstration.
Company production and acceptance-testing plans
Qualified. Shield AI plans X-BAT production beginning in 2029. Its September 30 release states that production aircraft will complete acceptance testing at Newton before delivery, with customers conducting their own acceptance flights there. These are company plans. The release provides no Navy production selection or fleet quantity.
